Masc Insights: FAQ
The Facts You Need
Have questions about certification, testing, or compliance? Our FAQ section provides clear answers to the most common queries about MASC’s services, including IECEx, ATEX, and IA certifications, inspections, Markscheme, and more.
Can you re-approve a flameproof enclosure with a GME “V” or “VM” number?
MASC can assess or test the enclosure according to the most recent standard to issue a new IA certificate.
Do you need to re-certify a piece of explosion protected apparatus once repair work is carried out on-site?
The repair work can be carried out by a permit holder, alternatively the repair work conducted must be evaluated by MASC.
Where can I find the IA certificate for a machine?
The product OEM or supplier must supply an IA certificate with the equipment supplied. Get Certified, Get Ahead: AI FAQ
Who can perform an independent audit on explosion protected flameproof or Intrinsically safe equipment?
MASC can perform inspections/audits according to the relevant standard requirements.
How long does a typical flameproof type assessment take and when will the IA certificate be issued?
A flameproof assessment is typically concluded in between two to six weeks depending on whether environmental conditioning is a requirement. An IA certificate will be issued immediately after completion of the assessment provided that the unit conformed to the requirements of the flameproof standards.
What is the difference between an IP and DIP?
A DIP assessment stresses the integrity of the sealing mechanisms utilised for ingress protection by subjecting the unit to environmental conditioning for a certain period. It is a requirement that Zone 20, 21 and 22 devices have a DIP rating and not just a IP rating.
How long does a typical intrinsic safety type assessment take and when will the IA certificate be issued?
An Intrinsic safety assessment is typically concluded in between four to six weeks, depending on the availability of technical documentation. An IA certificate will be issued immediately after completion of the assessment provided that the unit conformed to the requirements of the intrinsic safety standards.
What do I have to submit for an IS assessment?
1. A physical sample unit
2. A Circuit diagram with an accompanied bill of material
3. Other technical documentation like datasheets of safety components
4. Where there is no sufficient documentation available for a certain safety component, ten sample components must be submitted
5. 10 batteries/cells (Where the device in question is a battery-operated device)
6. Where the unit forms part of a larger system, a system diagram is required.
Why is this invoice not showing on my statement?
We have more than one company, and each company has its statements with its invoice range. Each company statement contains only the invoices for that company.
Please send me your company’s banking details?
The banking details are displayed on all invoices and statements (top centre of the document)
Why do we have to do batch testing and what is inspected?
Batch inspections are conducted by an ATL on a batch of apparatus of type tested and certified design, to verify compliance with this recommended practice. Batch testing is carried out by a test officer accredited for the relevant standard(s). The testing or assessment is carried out against the original test report and a checklist approved by the test officer.
